Dance in schools

Creative Learning through the Arts

Rubicon offers creative dance sessions and workshops that can be adapted to fit each school's needs and abilities. Sessions can be based on a theme that you're currently working on in school or skills based, or a combination of both!

We emphasise the benefits of creative learning and movement skills to help children in their creative and critical development and uphold our main belief that dance should be accessible to all, no matter what age or ability.
In doing so we aim to engage, motivate and increase pupils' confidence, whilst giving them the foundations to maintain healthy wellbeing. Pupils work as a team and we hope to give them opportunities to develop within Wales and the wider world by providing everyone with the opportunity to perform both for their peers, and in venues outside of school.

Our Experience

Rubicon started delivering sessions for schools in 1983 at Adamsdown Primary School. Since then, we have taken our sessions to schools across Newport, Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan. Building on 30+ years of experience, Rubicon's practitioners have a developed understanding and skills base working in both curricular and after school settings.

As a social arts organisation, Rubicon is well placed to share our specialist expertise in creative learning. The Welsh curriculum's focus on children and young people being creative contributors to the world is something close to our hearts, and we are pleased to be able to collaborate with schools on an ongoing basis in this area. Our sessions aim to develop skills in dance which pupils can use across the curriculum. These include:

  • How pupils can express ideas and emotions through different media;
  • The ways pupils can lead and play different roles within a group;
  • How pupils can use their energy and skills to benefit themselves and others both in school and the wider world.

Our after school sessions also aim to nurture these creative skills whilst engaging pupils in additional learning that can develop their confidence and wellbeing.

For schools interested in taking part in Rubicon sessions, we can offer taster workshops during a visit to your school or at our studios in Adamsdown. This is the perfect opportunity to find out more about Rubicon and the different opportunities for creative learning that can be achieved through dance.

For more information on our current opportunities/workshops for schools please refer to our Plwg page by clicking here. Alternatively, email Sharon Teear or Sam Hindle, Rubicon's Development Coordinators, to find out more about setting up a session for your school: [email protected] / [email protected]

The Annual Schools' Dance Festival

Every year we take our annual Schools' Dance Festival to St David's Hall in the centre of Cardiff. The event brings together schools from across South Wales to showcase their talent on the big stage. Over 50 schools and 1300 pupils took part in the 2020 festival! Want to be involved next year? Find out more info here.

"Thank you once again to everyone at Rubicon for organising such a fantastic event. Our children were wowed by the event and took real inspiration from watching the older children’s performances – not just the dances but the costumes! This year things seemed to run even more smoothly and there was very little time for the children to wait around back stage. As I said – a brilliant experience for everyone involved!"

- Claire Davies, Headteacher, Bryn Deri Primary School
